This weekend saw me getting a little time to slap some paint on yet another of my Sedition Wars Kickstarter exclusive minis, this time another homage sculpt to the Firefly sci-fi series based off of a beloved character of the ship's crew, Jayne Cobb.
The sculpt is okay, though seems to be leaning a little too far back and looks uncomfortable. But like the others, he'll do! He's wielding his beloved assault rifle, "Vera" and is also wearing an approximation of the woolen hat his mum knitted him on the show. (Though the hat on the sculpt looks more like a 1920's American Football leather helmet with a hat band than a woolly hat to me. I plan at a later date to add a greenstuff bobble to help with this.)
I had a hell of a time trying to get his eyes painted and after the 5th attempt just said "sod it" and went with this |
I managed to find some more of these homage minis from this Kickstarter so they'll be painted up too after I've given them a good priming including the last of the Firefly lot, River.
Stay well and safe out there - Dai
Great rendition of Jayne Dai, and his hat his mum sent him looks spot on
ReplyDeleteCheers Dave! I really do need to rewatch that series. So many great characters.
DeleteNice work! The recoil from the rapid fire rifle must be about to topple him.
ReplyDeleteThat must be it! LOL Thanks Jon
DeleteNice work Dai, it could be he is peering around a corner to see if he is being followed.
ReplyDeleteO! I haven't thought of that option! :)
DeleteCheers Terry.
Wow! That really is a far back lean! And you’re right about the hat looking like a oldie football helmet. Or maybe I don’t remember Jayne all that well. But the paint job is really nice. 😀
ReplyDeleteI think you remember him just fine mate. That pose is wonky, but not terribly so and really, he's painted, so in the long run I'm just happy with that!
DeleteI thought it didn't look too bad in the first picture, but woah that is quite the lean. Is this similar to the 'bones' material that can be deformed a bit from shipping/storage/remolding? Or is it 'lean as intended' by the sculptor?
ReplyDeleteI don't know about the lean being intended, it looks very unnatural so probably due to the casting process or some such. But I'm not worrying too much about it, though I could have perhaps used the hot water treatment to fix him some I guess?
DeleteFab paint job Dai he turned out great mate. I have done a similar thing with the eyes on my rebel infantry for Legion just doing the eyes on the main characters.
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon! I like to try to get the eyes done on all my minis if the pose allows. Doesn't always work out A+ though LOL At least he's not horribly googly-eyed I guess!
DeleteI'm with Dave, that first photo didn't look bad at all but yeah, that's quite the lean. Too bad to because you've done a great job on him 😀
ReplyDeleteThanks Ivor! I think he'll do for game table, but yeah, certainly not a display piece.
DeleteHummmm.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about the hat.
Yeah, I know they have to design these so they don't infringe on copyrights and so forth, but I think the sculptor stepped a little too far outside the box with that hat design.
DeleteHe looks pretty good and more importantly, he's finished!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Yep, that's the main thing I guess! Thanks Iain!
