I paint small metal and plastic figures and rarely get to play with them. But that is fine with me.

Comrade! (Part 4)

Some more Soviets for my Bolt Action army.

First up the squad Serzhánt. The star on the front of his Ushanka has been painted brown in the style of later war on the Ostfront. The regular red was too tempting a target for German snipers.

Running fellow who didn't get the memo regarding painting the star.

This bloke means business and seems to have gotten the sergeant's memo.

The first session of my rpg that I've been painting fantasy figs for these past few months happened Saturday and overall I think it went pretty well. The final mini that needed painting was for the Barbarian player character. The sculpt is another lovely effort by RedBoxGames from their last Barbarian Hordes Kickstarter.

(Apologies for the lighting, it was late when I took the pics.)

The eyes really let this effort down I think. But after the 5th attempt.... enough was enough.

  1. Loving your Ruskies. Thinking of getting a box (or two) for the left over DKK weapons...

    1. O! That would make for a really cool Valhallan regiment style deal! Nice idea!

  2. These just keep getting better and better Comrade, and I would reiterate my stance that these paintjobs blow away those on the "Warlord" website. Terrific looking Ruskies, Dai. And by Crom that barbarian is stonkingly good as well!!!

Btw a huge thanks for the little box which found its way into my hands today. I'm absolutely delighted with them both and already have plans to add them to a "Zombicide" painting push I'm planning in the near future, as I think their size and scale will fit in really well with some of the other heroes I have planned to paint. You're a top fellow!!!! :-)

    1. Thanks Michael. Think he'll be imposing enough to pick out on the tabletop. Will have to get creative though for my next two as they can't all be pointing places...

    2. Cheers lads.Trying to make the whole process interesting by varying the shades of grey in the coats. (No pun intended.) Next couple of fellows will have brown coats even.

  7. The Russians are fantastic. You will have to give us some tips on how to achieve stubble like that - I don't akways like the look on minis but you do it well. The big brute is awesome as well, like the tatoos a lot.
    Bravo zulu, mate.

    1. I'll be sure to add a little description of how I get the effect, though it's very simple and not at all exact.

      Thanks Mike.

  9. Very good! It might be the light but it looks like you've gone to all the effort to paint slightly different shades for all the colours which are notionally the same. Really good stuff!

    1. Yeah - they are a mix of 4 or 5 greys for the coats. I read somewhere on the internet that Soviet Infantry uniforms around late 44-45 were both made by a mix of factories with different dyes and also just plain old and faded by that time. Also, there's the odd lucky soldier who's family would post them warm clothes from home that were most welcome, but also different from issued uniforms, etc.

      Thanks mate.
