I paint small metal and plastic figures and rarely get to play with them. But that is fine with me.

The Crone and Cavalry

Title reads like a village pub's name.

But it's at least accurate to this post's content.

Was up late finishing painting this mini for my upcoming Barbarian rpg setting. She's made from pieces of the Games Workshop Corpse Cart driver, a Mantic Ghoul hand and the maggot pile is from the latest Nurgle Plaguebearer kit. I wanted her to look as though she could easily blend in town as some deranged street-dwelling woman, screeching out claims of the End of the World, etc. So this version of her is more her real persona, rising to command small groups of undead to eat her enemies, or to throw filthy hexes about her out of spite.

Added some grey to the skin colour to make her look somewhat pallid. Also some different grey to her hair to hopefully help show her advanced aging.

What took so long to paint was her shawl and cloak. Wanted very similar colours, but subtly different. Think it worked out well enough.

Spending so much time on the street leaves one's once clean garments somewhat otherwise.

It wasn't until I was editing this picture that I realised that a piece of her hair had snapped! Bugger....

I also FINALLY finished up the dreaded CSA Cavalry regiment! Pics are a bit naff though - seemed no matter how much light or little, how close the camera was to them, I just couldn't get good pics of these things. O well. They are done now and I'm happy for it.

Terrible sculpts, but they do look good all arrayed for war.

All I really need to do now is make and paint a matching pennant for their dismounted version Standard bearer.
I think that by finishing up this Cavalry regiment, I earned back another Joker?

  1. Nice work. The cloak on the crone looks a little John Blanche-esq. I like that almost impressionist mini painting style.

    1. Funny you should say that (and thanks by the way), but I was actually trying for that style!
My first time attempting it and I feel the cloak at least pays a little homage.

    2. I've been tempted by the inq28 modelling for a while. I love that really gritty grim dark style. I'd like to try some of that style of painting as well. A bit less precise and free.

    4. Haha, I have plenty of bits and bobs just sitting around begging for some paint. If you have a model in mind you want to convert up, I could paint it up grim dark-y and we could have a fun little blogger exchange. I did an exchange through a forum one time and it was lots of fun.

  2. Looks good Dai, how much did you need to sculpt yourself?

    1. Truth be told mate, absolutely nothing. Just took the pieces and glued and filed down. More a kit bash than a conversion really.

That's a cracking model for the old crone - very evocative and well done. Can't wait to see more of this RPG stuff, really enjoy seeing these updates mate.

    1. There'll be more ACW to come. 5 regiments of infantry to be exact.....

I've a ton of rpg figs just sat waiting to get painted up and more to arrive from a recently supported kickstarter, so I've plenty to showcase int he future.

      Cheers!

  7. The nice thing about that Crone, is you could easily use her as a Necromancer for a force of Revenants for SAGA!

The CSA Cav looks fantastic! I have ACW in 20mm Plastics and 6mm metal...I really should get painting them, as there are plans in the works for a huge alternative history campaign...hmmm

  8. Ooo! Never thought about the Saga idea. Will put that one int he mental file cabinet for later!

ACW looks rather impressive when all painted up in any scale. I hope you post up a good account of your project, as I do love me some alt history gaming!

    Thanks once again!
