3rd Awr-Range Wardens (Quar Fidwogs - Part 1)

And just like that, the classic "Dai Butterfly Attention Span" kicks in and leads my hobby off in a totally different and unexpected direction.

The estimable (Don't tell him I described him so.) Stew, author of the most excellent and entertaining "Terrible Loss of Lead and Wealth" blog (Currently on a blog-hiatus for sanity reasons) somehow managed to convince me to dip my toe into the very well fleshed out, whimsical and somewhat grim setting of Zombiesmith's skirmish wargame, Clash of Rhyfles. Other than the general Aesthetics of the game's setting, I was also drawn in by the fact that one needs only 8-12 miniatures each side to play. With time to game in general at such a premium these days, skirmish gaming rules supreme - at least for now.

Stew's very kind donation of the Fidwog Infantry plastic box kit got me started. Wargames Atlantic manufactures all the plastic Quar options for this game and I have to say I'm very impressed with the quality of their kits that have lots of fun options to personalise your Rhyflers (Name for basic infantry) and also that there are few to no obvious mold lines to contend with! The creator of the game also makes lots of 3D print files on his MyMiniFactory page to offer even more options for conversions and also special characters to flesh out your collection.

For those unaware, Quar are colourful anteater people who are stuck in a perpetual conflict across many nations with a technology level set somewhere between WW1 and the Inter-War period if real-life parallels are to be made. The Fidwog in the Quar setting are shorter cousins to the rest of the Quar (about 10% shorter than the average Quar, so think, Quar-not-dwarves) from the far-off east of their continent called Alwyd. The Fidwog are doughty folk known for their plentiful mines and fierce military who make the best use of makeshift hardware to get the job done.

This pic shows the standard squad makeup of a Fidwog unit. A Yawdryl (Squad Leader or Sergeant - The fellow in center with the green-stuffed pipe.), 4x Gaefyns (Regular troopers - Far left and the 3 to the right of the Yawdryl), a han-Gaefyn (a Corporal level) with a Squad Support Bensa LMG (To the immediate left of the tank) and closing out the squad is a Fyrnrydhad "Squad Tractor" armed with a MMG.

Official art of the Squad make-up. Reminds me of the style of art I'd scrawl all over my school books and desks as a kid. (And be berated for my graffitiing thereafter)

Highlight of this post (At least I think it's the highlight.) is the first painted member of this squad, the Yawdryl, Geraynt. I tried to sculpt a tiny crude smoking pipe so he'd stand out more and perhaps make him seem more of a veteran or older presence to enhance his image as the squad leader.

Yawdryl Geraynt is armed with the standard Rifle utilized by the Fidwog forces, the Sketych.

This rear view shows his pack with bedroll and hanging from the underneath, a barrel from a Crusader Bogen gun that the Fidwog are known to contain water or spirits within.

I'm still considering if I can source a tiny bit of teddy bear stuffing or some such to create a smoke effect to better help the pipe stick out, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with how this little creature turned out. The basing is done to match the background I've come up for my homebrewed regiment, a unit assigned to the highest mountain range along a contested border, the *3rd Awr-Range Wardens. So appropriately rocky-looking and a little spruce on vegetation with some very simple snow effects merely sponged on. Let me know if you think it works? In-game, the Fidwog are kinda the BEF of the setting and their 1st Army is the main subject when mentioned and shown in the fluff texts, seen in their standard uniforms of long red overcoats with blue piping. The 3 ARW were only just shipped out to the front in their standard home uniforms of red with yellow piping. They are proud of this differentiation as they feel it illustrates their (assumed) elite status amongst the FOD forces as only the toughest Quar are deployed to man the high passes of the Awr Range.

*More on the 3rd Awr-Range Wardens in a later post.

Stew is due to come by for a visit on the 24th of this month, so I'm aiming to get more of these boys painted up in time, we'll see. As always, hobby moments are sadly not abundant right now what with family events taking over my precious spare time, but we'll see if things go to plan.

Hope all are well out there,

- Dai

  1. That's a fun new project. Low mini counts are a great thing!
Im always reluctant to attempt to pronounce weird words.....Any chance there are jokes if you do try and say them (like old school warhammer)?

    1. Thanks Dave! Great for the prospect of trying to get them "Fully painted" and also regarding the relative low cost of entry into a game!
Ha! Yeah, the creator was wow'd and inspired after a trip to Wales and so most if not all of his naming conventions for this game are very heavily based off the Welsh language. Luckily I'm decent at pronouncing Welsh(And in turn, Quar-ish) having spent most of my childhood in Wales. But I definitely see how others would have a tricky time trying to wrap their tongues around those pronounciations.

  2. Have you trademarked "Dai Butterfly Attention Span" yet? That is a colorful looking figure you turned out. Will we see Stew return to the blogosphere or is he out for good?

    1. Not only trademarked, but tattoo'd on my good person as well. Total lies, but now I think on those ideas I find I am kinda tempted to go through with them ;)
That's one thing about the Quar, they have all these fun skin colours so I get to step away from the WW2 drab greens and greys and browns I've been painting of late by diving into this project.
I'll ask him and let you know. You're not the first to put forth that query.

  3. I wondered if Stewart would rope you in ! LOL Off to a fantastic start Dai, and great addition of a pipe. If your good lady has some cotton wall balls in the bathroom, pull a big clump off, super glue it to the pipe, once dry tease off to desired amount of smoke.

    1. You wondered correctly then mate. :)
Thanks Dave - I think she does. I'll be looking into that this weekend for sure. Appreciate the suggestion.

  4. Oh dear, I would say Stew is a bad influence on you, Dai - its perfectly possible to play small skirmish games with 28mm WW2 Germans and Greeks, you realise?!

    1. Stew is nothing but a bad influence Keith, but in all the best ways - aparently!
But would they be Quar Germans and Quar Greeks??? I think not. LOL

  5. I always enjoy someone's infectious enthusiasm for a new project, and this posting is packed full of it, Dai. Great start too. Sadly the Quar have never done it for me, but I have a gaming friend who is definitely getting tempted by them so perhaps if they get a box I'll follow suit. LOL!!

    1. Couldn't agree more. Stew's been trying to get me to start a Quar project for a while now and badgering me to join him too.
I hope your friend manages to snag you Simon, I really think you'll like these funny little fellers once they are in hand and the Clash of Rhyflers rules are actually very good too!

  6. Lovely looking Quar, nice pipe! Stew, who? Only joking, they always seem kind of fun in a slightly grim way?

    1. Thanks Iain! Totally silly fun and yes, grim. The more I look into them and their setting, the more I find I like them.

  7. Quar! Good stuff there, and yes, they are fun (although the fantasy tax is a bit annoying!). The kid has a platoon of crusaders. Well, a box of sprues and one built squad of crusaders at least.

Your sergeant looks great, although is it beardy to use the faction with the automatic weapons and squad level tanks?

As for Quar Germans, they do have Quar-Tyrolians in the Creevish, with lederhosen even, so I think that counts.

Hobby butterfly tattoo: Obviously it has different wing patterns for each side, one invasion stripe and one Great war German multi-color lozenge.

    1. Define that term please David? "Fantasy Tax"? (I'm not familiar with it.)

Beardy!? LOL Nope, Stew was the one who made the choice for me. He brought that on himself.

Creevish I think are about to get their won plastic kits so we'll see that for sure later this year.

Re: my Tattoo - I see you've been spying on my while I'm busy stretching reaching for top shelf liquor and my shirt rides up LOL

    2. The same figures but "fantasy" cost more, that's the fantasy tax. So quar are sort of like interwar riflemen, you can get interwar riflemen for $x, quar cost $x+y per figure. (Quar $1.87 per figure, Great war French $1.11 per and they come with five bonus weapon/head sprues to bring the figures up to 1940)

And yes, Creevish were promised last year, so maybe this year!

    3. O I see. Interesting and something should probably research. Thank you sir.

Maybe. Plastic Cavalry as well for the main two factions. (So hopefully plastic Fidwog Gwylon next year-ish? Cute toothy-kangaroo things...)

  8. He's a beauty Dai. I am pleased that you dived straight in and got one of the 'tanks' (tractors). They are so groovy. I seem to recall that it took Stew a while to get one. Like Dave and Keith I reckon HE has a lot to ant-ser for. I'll up the ant(e) as well and reckon that you need to tell him on the 24th that, it is spring up your way now, his winter sojourn is well and truly over and he needs to produced some more witty content for his avid readership! :)
    Best wishes, James

    1. Thanks James. Luckily the Fidwog plastic Infranty set comes with two of these Squad Support Tractors, so there'll be a second one coming in the future.
Another vote to get Stew's bum back into blogging mode, I'll be certain to add your voice to the request to get him to return!
(Your comment made me laugh btw - very clever.)

  9. Used to work with a guy called Geraynt when I was at the cheese factory in Newcastle Emlyn. He looked very much like your little chap. I think you’ll get a lot of fun out of this new project and maybe some regular games with Stew?

    1. O wow Mark - would you believe I used to live in LLangeodmor for a couple years as a young boy and went to school at Cenarth County Primary for a bit too? (We later moved to Saundersfoot and Tenby where I remained until I turned 18.) Small world.

Would love more regular gaming with Stew, but we're currently 2 hours drive from eachother with small children to contend with...
